Preparation: 10 minutes | Chilling: Overnight | Serves: 2
Mornings can be busy.
Between getting ready for work, preparing children for school and organising the day ahead, breakfast is sometimes the first thing we sacrifice.
But a satisfying homemade breakfast doesn’t have to require a complicated morning routine.
Apple and cinnamon overnight oats are simple to prepare, easy to customise and deliciously comforting.
With rolled oats, chia seeds, fresh apple and a handful of nuts, you can prepare breakfast the night before and enjoy it straight from the fridge the next morning.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Chilli Is A Spice Rolled Oats
- 1 cup milk or your preferred milk alternative
- ½ cup plain yoghurt
- 1 medium apple, grated or finely diced
- 2 tablespoons Chia Seeds
- ½ teaspoon Cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon Raisins
- 2 tablespoons chopped Pecan Halves
- 1 teaspoon honey (optional)
- A small pinch of salt
Shopping tip: Most of the dry ingredients are available through our Cereals & Breakfast, Seeds, Herbs & Spices, and Nuts & Dried Fruit collections.
Method
Step 1: Combine the dry ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, chia seeds, cinnamon and salt.
Stir to distribute everything evenly.
Step 2: Add the milk and yoghurt
Pour in the milk and plain yoghurt.
Mix until the oats and chia seeds are completely moistened.
Step 3: Add the apple and raisins
Fold in the grated apple and raisins.
For a sweeter breakfast, stir in a little honey.
Step 4: Refrigerate overnight
Divide the mixture between two clean jars or containers.
Cover and refrigerate for at least six hours, preferably overnight.
During this time, the oats soften and the chia seeds absorb liquid, creating a thick, creamy consistency.
Step 5: Add your toppings
In the morning, stir the oats and add a splash of milk if you prefer a thinner texture.
Finish with chopped pecans, a little extra cinnamon and fresh apple slices.
Serve chilled.
Why These Ingredients Work So Well Together
Rolled oats create the hearty base of the recipe, providing complex carbohydrates and dietary fibre.
Chia seeds absorb liquid and contribute fibre, helping create the creamy texture of overnight oats.
Apples and raisins add natural sweetness and contrasting textures.
Cinnamon introduces a warm, fragrant flavour that makes the combination particularly comforting.
Pecan halves add a satisfying crunch and a rich, nutty finish.
Together, they create a breakfast that is convenient without feeling ordinary.
Three Ways to Change Your Breakfast
One of the best things about overnight oats is how easy they are to reinvent.
1. Chocolate Breakfast Oats
Add a little finely chopped Chilli Is A Spice Dark Chocolate and sliced banana for a dessert-inspired breakfast.
2. Tropical Overnight Oats
Replace the apple with chopped mango or pineapple and finish with coconut flakes.
3. Crunchy Granola Oats
Sprinkle Chilli Is A Spice Granola over your oats just before eating.
The soft oats and crunchy granola create a particularly enjoyable texture.
Prepare Breakfast in Advance
Overnight oats are an excellent choice for meal preparation.
You can prepare individual jars for the following morning, which makes portioning easier and saves time during a busy day.
Keep the jars refrigerated and, for best quality, enjoy them within approximately two days.
If you’re preparing breakfast for someone who must avoid gluten, choose appropriately verified gluten-free oats and check all additional ingredient labels.
